The parish church of St. Maria Magdalena

location

The parish village is located at an altitude of 780 meters about two kilometers southwest of Spiegelau on the south side of a mountain ridge that is up to 790 meters high.

history

In 1395 Khreitzberg is mentioned in the Halser Salbuch with nine estates and two forest fiefs. 1472 Duke suggested Ludwig the Passau Bishop Ulrich priest Erasmus Schöttel before the "vacant altar of the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene in Krewtzperg" by the death of the last owner George. Accordingly, there was already a chapel in the village at that time. In the map of Philipp Apian from 1568 he is entered as Creitzperg . In a visitation protocol from 1558 it is noted that a holy service is always held.

From a pastoral point of view, Oberkreuzberg was originally a branch of Schönberg . In 1787 it became a branch and in 1894 a parish .

With the second Gemeindeedikt in May 1818, the municipality Oberkreuzberg was formed. The first mayor of the community was the master magician Josef Ertl. Also Klingenbrunn and Spiegelau were originally part of the community. Due to the development of the settlement, Klingenbrunn including Spiegelau was raised to an independent municipality in 1833.

The drinking water supply network was set up in 1911, and in 1925 it was connected to the electricity network. In addition to Oberkreuzberg , there was also the name and spelling Kreuzberg , which led to frequent confusion with the nearby Kreuzberg near Freyung . It was not until 1931 that Oberkreuzberg was officially introduced as a place and community name.

After the end of the war in 1945, the Americans appointed David Bauer and then Georg Schönberger provisional as mayors. In 1948 the community members elected Ferdinand Maier as mayor. He had to resign in 1954 when it turned out that part of his house was in the area of the Klingenbrunn district .

After a public vote, the district of List with 21 hectares, 53 houses and 399 people came to Spiegelau in 1963. In 1970, the municipality of Oberkreuzberg had 1,530 residents, 611 employed people and 117 farms. Of the 611 employed, 411 (67%) were commuters , 14% were employed in agriculture. The construction of an apartment hotel from 1970 to 1972 with 350 beds did not meet the expectations in the tourism sector, as the builder sold the apartments freely as second homes. Nevertheless, from 1972 to 1974 the number of beds for foreigners rose from 412 to 550 and that of the annual overnight stays from 43,270 to 66,000.

Oberkreuzberg came to Spiegelau as part of the regional reform in Bavaria in 1978, which was originally only part of the municipality of Oberkreuzberg. The last mayor of Oberkreuzberg, Josef Wolf, and his councilors approved the integration. The place was awarded several times in the competition Our village should be more beautiful . It has about 1200 inhabitants. From the observation tower you have an excellent view over the Bavarian Forest to the Alps.

In the 1990s, a small industrial area was created in the south of Oberkreuzberg.

Attractions

The Gothic parish church of St. Maria Magdalena goes back to the medieval chapel. It received a baroque redesign in the 17th and 18th centuries. Until the 20th century, it was also the church in Klingenbrunn and Spiegelau.
