The Odbert Island (or Odbert Island ) is an island in the archipelago of the Windmill Islands off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland .

geography

The island lies between Ardery Island in the west and the Robinson Ridge Peninsula in the east. To the north it is separated from the Mitchell Peninsula by Sparkes Bay , and to the south by the Hiegel Passage from Ford and Cloyd Islands . Odbert Island is about 2.7 km long and 800 m wide. The rocky coast rises steeply to a plateau, which is intersected by several valleys running south. While the valleys fill with snow in winter, the up to 90 m high hills remain essentially free of snow and ice. In some summers, the island remains connected to the mainland by sea ice.

climate

The climate on Odbert Island is roughly the same as that of Casey Station 12 km to the north on the Bailey Peninsula . The mean temperatures between 1957 and 1983 were 0.3 ° C in the warmest and −14.9 ° C in the coldest month. The average annual temperature was −9.3 ° C. The annual rainfall was 195 mm. Hurricane gusts occurred on an average of 96 days.

Flora and fauna

The flora of Odbert Island consists of eleven types of lichens , three types of moss and an unknown number of algae species .

An invertebrate only are ectoparasites of birds known for. B. the Antarctic flea .

The island has a colony of Adelie penguins that comprised 11,000 breeding pairs in 1989/90. The population has grown since then. The Cape petrel , the snow petrel , the silver petrel , the spotted petrel and the Antarctic kua also breed here .

natural reserve

Primarily for the protection of petrels was from Odbert- and Ardery Island, the specially protected area of Antarctica ASPA-103 under Annex V (protection and management of areas) of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty formed. The area is also designated as an Important Bird Area (AQ145) by BirdLife International .

history

Odbert Island was first mapped using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy in 1947 and 1948 during Operation Highjump and Operation Windmill . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1956 after Lieutenant Jack Alonso Odberg (1912-1988), assistant flight officer in the US Navy in Operation Windmill, who was involved in the construction of astronomical observation stations in January 1948.
