St. Andreasberger Kleinbahn

The Scharzfeld – St. Andreasberg , also known as the Odertalbahn , was a single-track, non-electrified railway line from Scharzfeld via Bad Lauterberg to St. Andreasberg -Silberhütte. The name is derived from the river Oder , which the route, which was dismantled in several stages until 2007, followed over large parts.

history

The line was opened on July 10, 1884 to Bad Lauterberg and extended on November 1, 1884 to the then terminus St. Andreasberg. In order to be able to better connect it with the town center, there was the St. Andreasberger Kleinbahn from 1913 to 1959 , a rack railway from St. Andreasberg West up to St. Andreasberg Stadt. She owned two cogwheel steam locomotives and two mountain railway passenger cars and took over the freight cars in Silberhütte up to the city station. There were also plans of the Prussian chief engineer Georg Fichtner from Berlin to extend the railway line to Bad Harzburg . However, this project was no longer carried out.

The traffic was switched to railcars at an early stage. In 1963, ten pairs of trains ran on weekdays, eight on Sundays, and an additional express railcar from Bad Lauterberg – Göttingen. After the Uerdingen rail buses, railcars of the series 515 , 628 and 624 were used as vehicles . The Heckeneilzug E 3754/3737 Bielefeld –Odertal also operated.

In the course of the general death of branch lines since the 1970s, the line gradually lost its passenger traffic.

On the remaining Scharzfeld – Bad Lauterberg line, the last passenger service operated by DB class 614 from Herzberg – Scharzfeld – Bad Lauterberg was discontinued on December 12, 2004 ; When the timetable changed on December 11, 2005, the Scharzfeld station was replaced by a new Bad Lauterberg stop in the Harz Barbis on the southern Harz line. This stop, with which Bad Lauterberg got another passenger traffic stop, is over 4 km west of the city center in the district of Barbis. However, the former Bad Lauterberg (Harz) train station was also around 1 km from the city center.

The last owner of the Scharzfeld – Bad Lauterberg section was the private Westfälische Almetalbahn , from whose point of view further operation could not be maintained economically, as several million euros would have had to be invested in the track superstructure and the safety technology of the eight level crossings at that time; at least three level crossings would have to be operated today, one of which is still completely intact.

The line, which had already been dismantled north of Bad Lauterberg and only served once to the south in 2006 to park freight cars, was finally dismantled in November 2007 as part of the preparations for the Oder Valley Bridge using a road- rail excavator . The freight wagons that were still parked in Bad Lauterberg at that time were scrapped on the spot. Curiously, after the completion of the Oder Valley Bridge in 2012, new railway ballast was laid in the area of the former level crossing of Bundesstrasse 27 , which was directly under the bridge; There are still no tracks here.

Route

The route has its starting point in Scharzfeld station, which has not been used by passenger traffic since 2005, in the northern part of the station. Scharzfeld station is on the main line from Northeim to Nordhausen , the standard-gauge southern Harz line . From Scharzfeld, the line first reached the Bad Lauterberg train station via the Zoll stop located in an incision, which, in addition to a few shunting tracks, also had several sidings and a loading ramp. The route then crossed the narrow-gauge Barytbahn and ran across the town along the Oder until it reached the Bad Lauterberg-Kurpark stop near the center and ran straight through the Kurpark. This was followed by the Odertal, Sperrluttertal and St. Andreasberg West (Silberhütte) stations, where there was a connection to the standard-gauge St. Andreasberger Kleinbahn.

Current condition

The rail-free railway embankment is still completely preserved outside of the buildings in Bad Lauterberg, most of it even with gravel. In addition, a piece of the old siding has been preserved in Silberhütte. Between the Silberhütte and the Odertal you can hike along the embankment. Most of the route between Odertal and Bad Lauterberg Kurpark has been converted into a walking and cycling path . Only between the Bad Lauterberg train station and Bad Lauterberg-Kurpark was the former route almost completely built over.

In addition, the reception buildings and platforms of the Scharzfeld, Bad Lauterberg (Harz) and Odertal stations are still completely in place. The half-timbered building of the Bad Lauterberg train station originally stood at the Hildesheim main train station , where it was inaugurated on July 12, 1846. When the city of Hildesheim needed a larger train station after just a few decades, it was dismantled piece by piece at the beginning of the 1880s and rebuilt and put into operation in Bad Lauterberg. While the Bad Lauterberg train station is now used as a restaurant, the reception building in Odertal is privately owned by a fishing club. St. Andreasberg West no longer exists; Bad Lauterberg Kurpark was also demolished in early January 2015 when the café opened.

Today the 450 bus runs along the entire route in the Southern Lower Saxony transport association , tied through to Herzberg am Harz , where there is a connection to the train from the local train station . The bus runs every hour between Herzberg and Bad Lauterberg, onward to St. Andreasberg Stadt only every two hours.
