description

Vegetative characteristics

Odontites citrinus is an herbaceous plant that grows 20 to 40 (rarely up to 60) cm high . It is richly branched, brownish-purple overflowing, the stem is about 4 mm thick at the base and bristly hairy on two opposite sides, glabrous in between. The trichomes are directed downwards, have a broad, basal hump and are up to 0.5 mm long. The plant develops twelve to 25 nodes , on the upper seven to 15 there are side branches up to about 25 cm long at an angle of 30 to 60 °.

The lanceolate leaves are 15 to 25 mm long and 2.5 to 3.5 mm wide and thus about six to eight times longer than wide. They are whole-edged, coarse and stiff and only have bristly hair on the edge.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences consist of 15 to 30 flowers , which are accompanied by foliage -like bracts . The bracts are ovate-lanceolate, with entire margins and hairy with short bristles on the edge. They are 5.5 to 6.2 mm long and 1.7 to 3.2 mm long. The lower bracts are longer than the calyx of the accompanying flowers. The inflorescences are 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, when the fruit ripens, they enlarge to a length of up to 4.5 cm.

The flowers reach lengths of 5.5 to 7 mm, the calyx is 3.3 to 3.7 mm long when it opens and enlarges on the fruit to 4.7 mm. The sepals are free from each other for a maximum of two thirds of the length, they are mostly bare. At the edge of the calyx lobes there are sparsely short bristle hairs and especially on the main veins on the ventral side, some up to 0.25 mm long stalk glands. The calyx lobes are broadly triangular. The crown is light yellow, hairless and has a 4 to 4.5 mm long corolla tube. The helmet is 4 to 4.5 mm long and thus slightly longer than the lower lip, which is split into three corners over half. Head glands up to 0.1 mm long are located at the tip bays and at the base. The central lobe is heart-shaped, wider than long and clear than the semicircular rounded side lobes.

The four stamens are partially hidden by the crown helmet, the upper pair reaches a length of 1.6 to 2.4 mm, the lower 2.8 to 3.3 mm. The stamens are sparsely papillary on the underside . The anthers are yellow or light brown in color, are 1.7 to 2 mm long and are at right angles to the stamen. They open over the entire length of the counters, which are narrowed at the bottom into a spiked tip up to 0.15 mm long. The upper end of the anthers is blunt and covered with spiral hair, in the lower part they are white-bearded hairy. The ovary is six in each of the two compartments ovary ovules . The stylus is up to 6 mm long.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits of Odontites citrinus are inverted egg-shaped capsules that are up to 4.5 mm long, about 1.5 times as long as they are wide and have a distinct margin. They contain seeds 1.5 to 1.8 × 0.6 to 0.9 mm in size .

Occurrence

The species is endemic to the Tunisian Mediterranean coast and grows on rocky slopes at altitudes between 10 and 100 m.
