Odontites hispidulus is a semi-parasitic plant species from the genus of the tooth rust ( Odontites ). It is endemic to Lebanon .

description

Odontites hispidulus is a 15 to 45 (rarely 70) cm high, highly branched, one-year , herbaceous plant . The stem is up to 6 mm thick at the base and woody in the lower part. It is filled with 0.1 to 0.8 (rarely up to 1) mm long trichomes . The vegetative shoot consists of 15 to 22 nodes , from which side shoots emanate from the upper eight to 18 nodes. These are up to 25 cm long and are sloping to bulky at an angle of 40 to 70 °.

The linear to lanceolate leaves are shed from the plant at an early stage. They have a length of 10 to 25 mm and a width of 1.8 to 3.2 mm. The edge is covered with teeth that are far away.

An inhibition zone of one to four (rarely up to ten) nodes is formed between the vegetative shoot and the inflorescences . The inflorescences are loose clusters of 15 to 30 flowers . At flowering time they are 2 to 3 cm in length, at fruit ripeness they have enlarged to a length of up to 4.5 cm. On the flowers there are foliage-like, scaly bracts with a lanceolate to ovoid-lanceolate shape, which are often covered with one to four teeth or have entire margins. They are densely hairy with long bristles; the trichomes are 0.3 to 0.8 mm in length. The lower bracts have a length of 4 to 6.5 mm and a width of 1.9 to 2.3 mm.

The flowers are 5 to 8 mm in length. The cup has mm at the beginning of flowering time a length of 2.5 to 3.5. At the fruit it only elongates slightly and is up to a maximum of 4 mm long. The sepals are about 2/3 free from each other and are densely long-bristled with up to 0.7 mm long trichomes, between which there are 0.08 mm stalk glands. The calyx lobes are porous triangular. The crown is colored yellow. The corolla tube has a length of 3.1 to 3.7 mm and is thus about half the length of the entire crown. The helmet is 3.4 to 4 mm in size. The upper pair of stamens is 3 to 3.7 mm long, the lower pair is 3.6 to 4.2 mm long. The connective of the dust bag is covered with club hairs that are only 0.2 mm long. The pollen grains have a size of about 17.3 × 21 µm.

The fruits are capsule fruits that reach a length of 4 to 5 (rarely up to 6) mm.

Systematics and botanical history

Within the genus of the tooth rust , the species is classified in the species group around the yellow tooth rust ( Odontites luteus ). The species was first described by Pierre Edmond Boissier in 1879 as the variety Odontites luteus var. Hispidulus , but was recognized as an independent species by Markus Bolliger in 1996 in his monograph on the genus Odontites .

Occurrence

The species is an endemic of Lebanon and grows on rocky slopes in height between 1,000 and 1,600 meters, possibly they can also be found down to 2000 m altitude.
