Odontites viscosus is a semi-parasitic plant species from the genus of the tooth rust ( Odontites ).

description

Vegetative characteristics

Odontites viscosus is an upright, mostly highly branched, annual , herbaceous plant . It is densely hairy and sticky. The hair consists of simple, 0.05 to 0.5 mm long, protruding or backward curved trichomes and 0.5 to 1.5 mm long stalk glands with a multicellular stalk and conical heads. The stems are 2 to 7 mm thick at the base. The vegetative part of the plant consists of ten to 30 nodes , of which five to 15 (rarely only two) side shoots emanate.

The leaves are lanceolate to linear-lanceolate in shape and pointed. They reach a length of 25 to 80 mm and a width of 2.5 to 10 mm. The leaf margin has two to four teeth towards the front or has entire margins.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences consist of seven to twelve (rarely up to 16) flowers , the zone of inhibition between the vegetative shoot consists of one to five nodes. At the beginning of the flowering period, the flowers are compact and dense, the inflorescences are then 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, when the fruit ripe the inflorescences loosen and reach a length of up to 3.5 cm (rarely up to 4 cm) . The flowers are accompanied by foliage-like, scaly, whole-margined bracts , which differ in length, shape and hairiness depending on their subspecies. The blooming sequence of the flowers within an inflorescence is from the top flower to the lower flower.

The flowers are vorweiblich (protogyn) and reach a length of 5 mm to. 7 At the beginning of the flowering period, the calyx measures between 2.5 and 3.5 mm, later it is elongated so that it can be up to 4.5 mm long on the fruit. It is almost divided into half and more or less densely covered with simple bristle hairs and stalk glands. The bristle hairs reach a length of 0.1 to 0.3 mm, the stalk glands are 0.1 to 0.6 mm long and end in conical heads that can consist of up to 100 cells. The crown is mostly light yellow in color, but sulfur-yellow or rarely purple-brown colorations also occur. The corolla tube is almost half as long as the entire crown. The helmet is longer than the lower lip. This is divided into three lobes over two-thirds or almost half of its length, with the central lobe usually being clearly delineated.

The four stamens protrude only slightly from the crown, their stamens are papillae . At right angles to the filaments are provided the dust bag , of which two each or all four felted at the top end by helical hair together. The lower tips of the counters are pointed and dorsally covered with up to 0.4 mm long, warty beard hairs. The pollen grains have a size of about 25 × 30.5 µm. The bicompartmental ovary forms four ovules . The stylus is usually hidden in the helmet and is up to 4 mm long, the scar is head-shaped.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are inversely egg-shaped, mostly clearly edged capsules , which are 2.8 to 4.4 mm long and are covered in the upper quarter with 0.6 mm long hairs. The seeds are 1.5 to 2 mm long and 0.7 to 1 mm wide.

Distribution and locations

The species is distributed from northern Morocco to the western and central alps ( Valais ). The species is particularly adapted to partially shaded locations due to the strong glandular hairs. The nominate form grows at altitudes between 400 and 1300 m (rarely 100 to 1800 m).

Systematics

Five or six subspecies are distinguished within the species:

  • Odontites viscosus subsp. viscosus
  • Odontites viscosus subsp. australis (Boiss.) Jahand. & Maire : It occurs in Spain, Algeria and Morocco.
  • Odontites viscosus subsp. eriopodus litard . & Maire : It occurs in Algeria and Morocco.
  • Odontites viscosus subsp. granatensis (Boiss.) Bolliger : It occurs in Spain. It is also regarded by some authors as a separate species: Odontites granatensis Boiss.
  • Odontites viscosus subsp. hispanicus (Boiss. & Reut.) Rothm. : It occurs in Portugal and Spain.
  • Odontites viscosus subsp. lusitanicus Bolliger : It occurs only in Portugal in coastal locations in the province of Estremadura .
