geography

Geographical location

history

Offensen was already mentioned in a document as Uffenhusen in 1255: Knight Balduin von Blankenburg donated the tithe of two houses in Offensen to Wienhausen Monastery . Three years later (1258) the village was called Offenhausen . In that year the nephew of the knight of Blankenburg, Truchsess Anno von Campe, gave the monastery a farm in Offensen, which he had had as a fiefdom from the bishop of Hildesheim .

The Lords of Offensen had their headquarters in today's town of Offensen. The estate was on the higher field north of the village, immediately southwest of the old Allerarm. In 1647 this family died out with the death of Ilse von Offensen. Her sister Salome von Offensen had married Georg von Merrettich in 1587. She died on October 2, 1614 in Schlanstedt . The Offensen estate was passed on to von Merrettich this year. Those of horseradish died out around 1747. The property at Offensen was then transferred to the Schenk zu Winterstedt in neighboring Schwachhausen .

On April 12, 1945 Offensen was liberated by the 1st Battalion of the 333rd US Infantry Regiment. The aim of the American associations was the Allerbrücke in Schwachhausen, which at that time was the only remaining bridge in this area. The war memorial was damaged during the march through. In the following days, civilians from Schwachhausen were housed in Offensen, as fighting was taking place near Nordburg .
