Yōko Ogawa

Yōko Ogawa ( Japanese 小川 洋子 , Ogawa Yōko ; born March 30, 1962 in Okayama , Okayama Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese writer .

Life

Ogawa studied at Waseda University in Tokyo . Inspired by classical Japanese literature, the works of Kenzaburō Ōe and the diary of Anne Frank , she began her career as an author in 1986. Her debut work, the story Agehachō ga kowareru toki , earned her the Kaien Prize in 1988.

In 1991 she won the renowned Akutagawa Prize for the novella Ninshin Calendar ("Pregnancy Calendar ") . For the novel Hakase no aishita sūshiki , which was made into a film in 2006 under the direction of Takashi Koizumis , she was awarded the 2004 Yomiuri Literature Prize; Mīna no kōshin brought her the Tanizaki Jun'ichirō Prize in 2006 . 2005 her novel was The ring finger of Diane Bertrand filmed.

In 2020, The Memory Police , the English translation of Ogawa's novel Hisoyaka na kesshō (密 や か な 結晶) by Stephen Snyder, which was published in 1994, was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize .

Ogawa's work, which consists of over ten novels and numerous short stories, has been translated into Chinese, Korean, French, German, Italian, Greek, Catalan, Spanish, and English. Her work is published in German by Liebeskind Verlag in Munich , the paperback editions are licensed for Aufbau-Verlag .

Ogawa lives with her family in Hyogo Prefecture .
