Ohaeawai is a village in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the village is made up of the Māori terms " O ", which stands for place or place, and " haeawai ", which is the term for thermal water. The settlement was originally called Taramai , but later named after the nearby Pā ( Māori village).
geography
The village is located around 17 km west-northwest of Kawakawa and around 5.5 km east of Lake Omapere , in the plain of the Waiaruhe River with its western tributaries. The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through the village , from which the New Zealand State Highway 12 branches off to the southwest in the center of the village . The nearest settlement to the east is Pakaraka , around 6.5 km away and the nearest town is Kaikohe , just under 10 km southwest.
history
From June 30 to July 1, 1845, the battle of Ohaeawai took place near the community on Ohaeawai -Pā of Māori chief Pene Taui . British troops fought against the Ngāpuhi warriors under the leadership of chiefs Hone Heke and Te Ruki Kawiti .

At the 2013 census, the village had 714 inhabitants, 0.4% more than at the 2006 census.
economy
About 3 km southwest of the village is Ngawha Springs , which benefits from the healing water of the small geothermal area. Also nearby is the Northland Region's new prison . The village itself mainly lives from sheep farming.
Education
With the Ohaeawai School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 6. In 2014, 139 students attended the school.
