Okara is a city in Punjab , Pakistan. The name of the city comes from Okaan , which means tree. Okara is located southwest of Lahore and Faisalabad and is 100 km from the Ravi River. Okara is known for agriculture and its cotton mills. The next largest city is Sahiwal .
history
Okara is a relatively new agricultural town. During the British Indian era , the city was part of the Montgomery District. A potassium nitrate factory was located on site. Today there is a textile industry in Okara. The predominantly Muslim population supports the Muslim league in elections. After Pakistan's independence, many Muslims settled in Okara. There has been a train station in Okara since 1892. Okara is also known for its water buffalo . The Bahadar Nagar Farm is also located in Okara. Okara was founded by Siri Chand and was formerly called Siri Nagar. There are inconsistencies in finding a name. It is also said that the city was named after Raja Deva Pala. In 1918 Okara received the status of a Tehsil . In the 14th century, Feroze Shah Tughlaq visited Okara frequently and had a mosque built outside Okara.
Demographics
Most of the population in Okara are followers of Islam. Okara is home to the following Pakistani ethnic groups: Syeds, Zaidi, Naqvi, Rizvi, Kazmi, Gillani, Kirmani, Rajputs. Clans like Toors, Bhattis, Nonaris, Siyals, Wattus, Rangarhs, Kamyanas, Shaikhs, Lodhis, Kharal, Kambohs, Khanzadas, Noons, Arain and Chaudhary. The Jat ethnic group is underrepresented in Okara.
Agriculture
Corn, potatoes and dairy products are grown in Okara. Okara is Pakistan's largest city in the production of single vegetables and dairy products.
