from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Olaf Wolters (born December 15, 1971 in Langenhagen , Germany ) is a German lawyer and lobbyist . From 2005 to 2011 he was managing director of the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) .

Life

Olaf Wolters grew up with four siblings in Hanover , where he also went to school. He completed his law studies in Göttingen and Oslo. After his legal clerkship in Frankfurt am Main and New York , he was admitted to the bar in 2001. After four years as a media lawyer in Frankfurt am Main, he was appointed managing director of the newly founded industry association of computer and video game providers BIU in summer 2005, which he led until September 2011. From October 2011 to May 2018 he worked as a lawyer in the law firm Boehmert & Boehmert in Berlin and Potsdam . The firm specializes in intellectual property law and industrial property rights . Olaf Wolters has been General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at the internet company idealo internet GmbH since May 2018.

Professional activities

As the founding managing director of the BIU, Olaf Wolters initially built up the office and administration of the association. From 2006 and 2009, after the rampage in Emsdetten and the rampage in Winnenden, he led a bitter debate with politicians about a ban on killer games . As a result of the political controversy over the protection of minors in computer games , the entertainment software self-regulation was reorganized in 2008 under the sponsorship of the industry associations. A Counter-Strike-LAN party in the German Bundestag marked the end of the political killer game debate.

From 2005 to 2011 Olaf Wolters was a board member and chairman of the legal committee of the Society for the Prosecution of Copyright Infringements (GVU). During this time, GVU took action against the illegal video-on-demand website kino.to , which ultimately led to the shutdown of various streaming portals.

In contrast, the move of the German trade fair for computer and video games from Leipzig to Cologne , initiated by Olaf Wolters for the BIU, was controversial . After disputes about the organization of the German industry fair Games Convention , sponsored by the BIU, the association relocated the industry fair to Cologne, which has been taking place there as gamescom since 2009 .

On behalf of idealo, Olaf Wolters is handling the claim for damages against the search engine provider Google because of the abuse of a dominant market position. The basis of the lawsuit is the decision of the European Commission to impose a fine of EUR 2.4 billion on Google because the company preferred its own search engine services.

As a lawyer, Olaf Wolters has mainly dealt with legal violations on the internet and digital media law. Since the winter semester, he has been a lecturer at the University of Paderborn for media law in 2016 .
