Olav Ulland (born November 23, 1910 in Kongsberg , † June 7, 2003 in Bellevue , Washington ) was a Norwegian - American ski jumper , ski jumping trainer and official.

Career

Ulland started for Norway at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1930 . With jumps of 47.5 and 48.5 meters, he ended up tied with Sweden's Erik Rylander in fifth place. As one of three jumpers, he set a new hill record on the Holmenkollbakken when jumping in the combined competition . On March 17, 1935, Ulland jumped 103.5 meters in Ponte di Legno in Italy . However, when landing he reached into the snow, which is why the distance was not considered a ski flying world record . Instead, the Swiss Fritz Kainersdorfer set it with 99.5 meters.

At the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Ulland was active as a trainer for the Italian ski jumping team. In 1937 he moved to the United States , where he began training young jumpers near Seattle . A little later, he borrowed US $ 2,000 from his friend and businessman Eddie Bauer and, together with alpine ski racer Scott Osborn, founded Osborn & Ulland in 1941 , which grew into a small retail chain with five branches in Washington and Oregon in the 1980s . The last shop did not close until 1995.

In 1954, Ulland got involved in setting up the Kongsberger Ski Club in Seattle. The club, which still exists today, focused in the first few years on ski jumping and cross-country skiing . Since 1974 he has only been active in cross-country skiing.

At the 1956 Winter Olympics and the 1958 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti , he was the head coach of the US national team. Later Ulland was also active as a jumping judge and technical delegate. Among other things, he was in charge of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid .

Awards

As early as 1957 he received the Julius Blegen Award from the US Ski Association . In 1981 Ulland was inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame . The Pacific Northwest Ski Association annually presents the Olav Ulland Award for good performance in Nordic skiing.
