Ole Schmidt (composer, 1928)
Ole Schmidt (born July 14, 1928 in Copenhagen , Denmark ; † March 6, 2010 ) was a Danish conductor , composer and jazz pianist .
Life
Ole Schmidt performed as a jazz pianist in restaurants in his early years, then studied piano and composition with Vagn Holmboe , Finn Høffding and Niels Viggo Bentzon at the Det Kongelige Danske Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Later he was trained as a conductor by Rafael Kubelík and Sergiu Celibidache . From 1954 he composed several pieces for theater and ballet. From 1958 to 1965 he was employed as a conductor at the Danish Ballet at Det Kongelige Teater . After a year as a conductor with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra , he held the same position at Radio Sinfonietta from 1971 to 1974active. From 1978 to 1984 he was a conductor at the Aarhus Symfoniorkester . He achieved international fame in 1974 when he conducted all six of Carl Nielsen's symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra . A year later he was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize for this achievement .
From 1956 to 1986 Schmidt was also active as a film composer, so he set the sound film classic The Passion of the Maiden of Orléans, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer , to new music in 1982. His last work as a film composer was the film biography The Eyes of the Wolf in 1986 . He released several CDs on the Danish record label DaCapo .
Schmidt died on March 6, 2010 at the age of 81. From around 1960 he was married to the dancer Lizzie Rode, with whom he had two children.
