Oleksandr Juchimowitsch Rodnjanskyj ( Ukrainian Олександр Юхимович Роднянський ; born July 6, 1961 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian director, producer and media manager, founder of the TV channel 1 + 1 and Honored Artist of Ukraine (1998). He has been a member of the American Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences since June 2016 .

Life

Oleksandr Rodnyanskyj was born into a family of filmmakers. His grandfather, the screenwriter Zinovi Rodnjanskyj, was the editor-in-chief of the documentary film studio; his father, Jefim Friedman, was the chief engineer, and his mother, Larissa Rodnjanskaj , ran the “Kontakt” film studio of the Association of Filmmakers of Ukraine.

Oleksandr Rodnjanskyj studied film directing with Felix Sobolew at the Kiev National Karpenko-Karyj University for Theater, Film and Television. In 1983 he joined the “Kiewnautschfilm” (Kiev Science Film Studio) as a film director. Rodnjanskyj's documentaries received numerous Russian and international awards, such as B. Tired Cities (Ustalye goroda), Raoul Wallenberg's Mission , Rendezvous with Father (Svidanye s otsom), Adieu, USSR. Film I Personal (Prostshai, SSSR. Film I. Lichnyi), Adieu, USSR. Film II. (Prostshai, SSSR. Film II.). From 1990 to 1994 Rodnjanskyj worked as a producer and director for ZDF .

After his return to Ukraine, Rodnjanskyj founded the first independent Ukrainian-language television channel "1 + 1" in 1995 on the basis of the former state "First Channel". On “1 + 1”, new genres and formats were presented for the first time in the history of Ukrainian television. For example, the international TV magazine “Telemania”, the political talk show “Tabu”, the political debate format “5 against 5” and the humorous talk show “SV-Show”. The station showed films by Martin Scorsese , Sergio Leone , Peter Greenaway , Jim Jarmusch and other classics as well as the American series "Dynasty", "Melrose Place", "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Nash Bridges", and only a few months after the start of the station, the ratings for viewers aged four and over rose to over 35%. Shortly thereafter, the game show “The First Million” - the Ukrainian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” And the show “Dance with the Stars" started.

In 1997 Rodnjanskyj sold 30% of the station for 22 million US dollars to Central European Media Enterprises.

In 1998 the broadcaster “1 + 1” and “NTV-Profit” produced the series “The bourgeois birthday” (Den 'rozhdenia burzhua), (script: Juri Rogosa, director: Anatoli Mateschko), the first TV series about the post-soviet life during the 90s. The series was a first attempt at a current reflection of the "new life"; audience ratings rose to 60%.

In 2002 Rodnyanskyj left his post as CEO of the station, but remained the owner. In 2008 he sold his shares in the American company CME (Central European Media Enterprises) for $ 220 million US dollars.

In 2002 he moved to Moscow and took over the management of the station. Since 2004 Rodnjanskyj has headed the entire holding "STS Media".

According to information from TNS / Gallup Media, STS, under Rodnjanskyj's leadership, achieved an average audience share of 10.6% in 2006. The series Arme Nastja , Not Pretty Born and My Fair Nanny were particularly successful - they made STS the most important entertainment channel in the country. In 2005 the station "Domaschni" started. In 2006, STS Media became the first Russian company whose shares were traded on NASDAQ. The period of constant growth ended in autumn 2006, the quota of the canal fell. In 2007 the sitcom Papas Töchter started and achieved top ratings.

In 2008, Rodnjanskyj left the management of the holding company, but remained in the position of company president. He remained a co-owner and member of the supervisory board until 2009. When Rodnjanskyj left STS Media, it was one of the largest media holdings in Europe with five TV channels in three countries and a market capitalization of over 4 billion US dollars.

In 2010 and 2011 Rodnjanskyj was chairman of the expert council of the "National Media Group". Under his leadership, the channels REN TV and “Fünfter Kanal” were restarted in 2010. Rodnjanskyj has been concentrating on the production of films and television formats since 2011.

Rodnjanskyj is the producer of more than 30 feature films and 20 series. In 2004 Rodnjanskyj acquired the “Kinotawr” film festival and became the head of the board of trustees. In 2008 Rodnjanskyj was appointed to the jury of the Berlin Film Festival .

Rodnjanskyj is co-founder and chairman of the German-Russian Film Academy, a member of the European Film Academy, the National Russian Academy of Cinematography and Film Studies "Golden Eagle", the Russian Film Academy "Nika", the Board of Directors of the Academy of Russian Television, an associate member of the International Council of National Academy of Television Arts (USA), Honored Artist of Ukraine, Jury Chairman of the Tallinn and Yerevan Film Festivals and the Artdocfest Festival, Moscow.

Rodnjanskyj's productions 1001 Recipes of a Cook in Love (Director: Nana Georgadze, 1996), Ost-West (Director: Regis Varnier, 2000) and Leviathan (Director: Andrei Svjagintsew, 2015) were nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best Foreign Film" .

In 2009 Rodnjanskyj founded the management company AR Films, which unites the film production company "Non-Stop Production", the developer and operator of the GameNet game platform and publisher of Russian-language computer games Syncopate, the largest independent film distributor "Kino ohne Grenzen" and the Russian film festival "Kinotawr".

In 2013, the new film by director Fyodor Bondarchuk and producer Rodnjanskyj Stalingrad hit theaters, grossed $ 51.76 million in Russia and became the top-grossing Russian film of the decade. Stalingrad is the first Russian film in IMAX 3D. According to information from KinoPoisk, the film grossed 68.2 million US dollars worldwide. The international premiere of the film took place as part of the International Film Festival in Rome. On October 31, 2013, Stalingrad started in China and hit a box office record as a foreign film (not produced in the US or Europe). Overall, "Stalingrad" brought in 11.5 million US dollars.

In 2013 the publishing house “Mann, Ivanov and Ferber” published Oleksandr Rodnjanskyj's book appearance of the producer . In December 2015 the publishing house "Mann, Ivanov and Ferber" published the second supplemented edition of the book.

In 2014, in the competition program of the 67th Cannes International Film Festival, the premiere of the film Leviathan , directed by Andrei Svyagintsev, took place. The film won the award for "Best Screenplay". In January 2015 the film was awarded the Golden Globe . Leviathan was nominated for an Academy Award Oscar, but lost to Pawel Pawlikowski's Ida .

Rodnjanskyj has been the curator of the Film Production Faculty of the Moscow Film School since 2015.
