Olga Törös (born August 4, 1914 in Debrecen ; † February 16, 2015 in Kecskemét ) was a Hungarian gymnast . One of her greatest successes was the bronze medal in the team all- around competition in apparatus gymnastics at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin .

life and career

Törös was born in 1914 as the daughter of the teacher and headmaster Károly Törös in the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen . Even as a child she was very agile, but only began her career as a gymnast at an advanced age after completing her school career. From 1928 to 1934 she graduated from the Debreceni Református Kollégium Dóczy Gimnáziuma in her hometown and began training as a teacher and physiotherapist at the Testnevelési Főiskola Debrecen , a university faculty for physical education , in 1934/35 .

In 1936 Törös took part in the gymnastics at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin as a member of the Magyar Testnevelési Egyetem Sportegyesülete Budapest , TFSE Budapest for short , and the Hungarian national team. She was brought into the Hungarian national team by a delegation that she had seen at a national tournament in Debrecen. As an individual athlete, she was less successful, as shown by a 47th place on the pommel horse , a 15th place on the uneven bars and a 30th place on the balance beam at the Dietrich-Eckart open-air stage . In the final ranking it was only enough for her in the individual ranking for 30th place, but she reached third place with the team and thus the bronze medal in the team all-around competition .

After the Olympic Games she continued her studies at the University of Physical Education, graduated from Semmelweis University in the capital Budapest in 1939 and immediately moved to the central Hungarian Kecskemét , where she worked as a sports teacher for 35 years before she retired in 1974 at the age of 60. Her husband Andor Szemerey was also active as an athlete and sports teacher, especially in water polo, in the city of Kecskemét. A son also comes from this relationship. In 2011, Törös was honored for her life's work by the Hungarian Olympic Committee ; Furthermore, in May of the same year the sports hall of the university in Kecskemét was renamed Törös Olga Sportcsarnok in her honor .

Three years later she celebrated her 100th birthday and in the same year was made an honorary citizen of Kecskemét and named "Immortal of Hungarian gymnastics" ( Hungarian : magyar tornasport halhatatlanja). In 2012 another sports facility was renamed in honor of Olga Törös; she also received the title of honorary professor.

On the morning of February 16, 2015, Törös died at the age of 100 in her hometown of Kecskemét. The last farewell and burial took place on March 7, 2015 at Kecskeméti Köztemetőben , the Kecskemét cemetery. Immediately afterwards, a book was published in her honor, the work of which began shortly before her 100th birthday in spring 2014 and which, among other things, describes her extensive life.
