He studied at Chelsea Polytec and Imperial College in London. From student days, he was closely associated with the paleontologist James Stubblefield friends, with whom he field studies on the Paleozoic of Shropshire hired (the third was in league later Geology - Professor in Bristol Walter Frederick Whittard , the Bulman after dissertation on amphibians of Perm worked ). This started his interest in graptolites, which he studied after graduating from Imperial College in Cambridge in 1926 with Gertrude Lilian Elles (1872-1960). In 1928 he received the Huxley Memorial Medal. In 1966 he resigned from his chair to devote himself only to research, which he did at the Sedgwick Museum .

Bulman published a series of works in the 1930s based on the graptolites prepared by the Swede Gerhard Holm. Bulman, whose father was the artist Henry Herbert Bulman, benefited from an excellent talent for drawing in his publications on graptolites.
