Olivet is a city in Eaton County in the American state of Michigan . According to the 2000 census, there are 1,758 inhabitants in Olivet.

history

Olivet was founded in 1844 when Rev. John J. Shipherd founded Olivet College . The place got its name after the Mount of Olives . In 1865 Olivet was given a charter as a village and incorporated as a city in 1958.

The historian Golo Mann taught history here from autumn 1942 to summer 1943.

geography

Olivet is mostly on the western bank of Indian Creek , off Interstate 69, which runs a few miles to the northwest . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​2.6 km², without any significant body of water. The town's Main Street is a former route from US Highway 27 .

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Olivet was inhabited by 1,758 people. The population density was 672.0 people per km ². There were 488 housing units at an average of 186.6 per km ². The Olivet population was 84.30% White , 9.61% Black or African American , 1.65% Native American , 1.65% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 1.76% of other races belong to and 0.97% named two or more races. 2.10% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Olivet were distributed to 474 households out of which 39.2% had children under 18 years of age. 40.1% of the households were married, 16.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 38.0% were not families. 28.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 6.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.20.

The population was divided into 22.0% minors, 41.5% 18–24 year olds, 20.3% 25–44 year olds, 11.8% 45–64 year olds and 4.5% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 women there were 102.1 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 104.5 men.

The median household income in Olivet was 34,474 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 40,781 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,602 compared to $ 19,904 for women. The per capita income was $ 11,682. 10.7% of the population and 8.0% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 10.2% of minors and 5.7% of those aged 65 and over.

Olivet has Olivet High School , Middle School, and Fern Persons Elementary School .

The future priestess and suffragette Augusta Jane Chapin began her studies at the Olivet Collage in 1852. Even William W. Blackney , of the United States House of Representatives belonged in eight legislative sessions, attended this school.
