The Ollagüe is an active volcano in the Andes . It is located on the border between Bolivia and Chile , in the Department of Potosí in Bolivia and the Región de Antofagasta in Chile. Its height is 5870 meters. A cloud of steam from fumaroles, which can be seen from afar, often stands over the south side of the summit .

The next town is the Chilean border town of the same name Ollagüe or the town of Buenaventura about five kilometers away .

Mining

Sulfur was mined immediately below the summit from the beginning of the twentieth century until 1976 . In the western flank of the volcano, a road from Buenaventura goes up to an altitude of 5672 m. On this street you can see a former miners' camp at an altitude of 4292 m. Another road leads directly from Buenaventura from the west to the south flank and there up to an altitude of 5500 m. A larger work area was set up on this street at a height of 4718 m. Another road leads on the Bolivian side from the railway near the town of Avaroa over the east side of the volcano to its southern flank up to a height of 5494 m. In the south flank there is a connection between the last two streets mentioned.

Practically only Quechua Indians from Bolivia or Peru were employed in mining , as only these were used to working at such heights. Biorlando usually had 80 people working on the volcano.

Material ropeway

A material ropeway went from Buenaventura, at an altitude of 3719 m, to a mountain station on the edge of the south flank at an altitude of 4717 m, thus overcoming an altitude difference of around 1000 m. The remains of the mountain station, a middle station about halfway there and the cable car route can still be seen. The 11 km long cable car was primarily used to remove the sulfur. In 1948 the cable car was replaced by trucks that could drive directly to the excavation sites.
