The flyweight boxing matches at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin took place from August 10 to 15 in the Deutschlandhalle .

Course of the competition

Since the British Pat Palmer (European champion and champion of the British Empire in 1934) and the American Johnny Marceline (American champion 1935) had become professionals, they were not allowed to participate in the games. The new rules on fighting weights created more trouble for the flyweight than any other. Some athletes were too heavy and therefore had to compete in a higher weight class to avoid disqualification. For this reason, a prognosis for the Olympic victory was very difficult. Before the tournament, Louis Laurie from the United States, French Gaston Fayaud , Argentine Alfredo Carlomagno and Felipe Nunag were all favorites.

In the first round, the 18-year-old American Laurie caused a stir. The youngest member of the US team in Berlin came to a quick and precise victory against Rudolf Bezděk from Czechoslovakia. The German Willy Kaiser was also able to impress in his first fight when he forced the referee to break off the fight in the second round against the Chilean Guillermo López to protect the South American from injuries. Kaiser was also able to convince in his other fights, for example he defeated the Uruguayan Fidel Tricánico in the quarter-finals and Carlomagno from Argentina in the semifinals. Laurie failed in a close fight against the Italian Gavino Matta from Sardinia.

In the final, Kaiser attacked from the start and set a high tempo. Matta received a few hits and had a few cuts around the eyes. In the end, Kaiser won on points and won the first ever German gold medal in boxing at the Olympic Games. The Argentine did not compete in the battle for bronze, which is why the American Laurie won bronze without a fight.
