For the first time in Olympic history, a women's skeleton competition was held at the 2002 Winter Olympics . The race was held on the track at Utah Olympic Park on February 20 . 13 athletes from 10 different nations started. The first run started at 09:50 a.m., the second run at 11:05 a.m.

Tristan Gale from the United States became the first Olympic champion in skeleton . After the first run, in which she set the fastest time, she was only a hundredth of a second ahead of her compatriot Lea Ann Parsley , who won silver. Gale also set the fastest time in the second run. The bronze medal was won by Alexandra Coomber from Great Britain.
