Omega Massif was a German post-metal band from Würzburg . The band, which was founded in 2005, drew positive attention from critics with their 2007 debut, Geisterstadt , followed by their second album Karpatia in 2011 . The band played only instrumental music, the motif was based heavily on mountains.

history

The band was founded in 2005 by the guitarists Andreas Schmittfull and Michael Melchers. Boris Bilic and Christof Rath completed the band a little later as drummers and bassists, respectively.

The band released the demo recording Kalt and the following year the debut album Geisterstadt on the record label Radar Swarm Records. Kalt was re-released on vinyl in 2008 in a version remastered by James Plotkin . In the period that followed, two split releases appeared with the band Mount Logan and Tephra from Braunschweig, also from Würzburg . The second studio album Karpatia was released after two years of studio work in 2011 on Denovali Records , which had already re-released Kalt und Geisterstadt in 2010 .

Omega Massif played as the opening act for Long Distance Calling , Wolves in the Throne Room and Baroness , among others . In 2009 and 2010 there were festival appearances at the Doom Shall Rise in Göppingen , the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg and the Hellfest in Clisson . In August 2014 Omega Massif was booked for the Summer Breeze in Dinkelsbühl ; At the end of May, however, the band announced their dissolution on Facebook for no reason.

Schmittfull and Rath announced the founding of their successor band Phantom Winter just two weeks later , Melchers founded Cranial at the end of 2014 , and Bilic became a member of the Würzburg band Blacksmoker at the beginning of 2015 .

style

The band played a typical post-metal mix of hardcore punk , doom metal , progressive rock and ambient . Other writers also heard elements of metalcore and post-rock . Parallels were drawn with Pelican , Isis and Year of No Light . The band itself described itself as "heavyweight mountain doom", Melchers saw his guitar work also influenced by Black Metal . In the second album, the band referred to both Walter Benjamin and the documentary Carpatia by Andrzej Klamt and Ulrich Rydzewski .

With the exception of a few choirs, the compositions by Omega Massif were instrumental because, according to Schmittfull, the band wanted to create moods that did not require vocals. Nature served as the atmospheric reference point, especially in the frequently recurring motif of the mountains. Andreas Schmittfull said in an interview: “As soon as you are on the mountain, you are in another world. [...] Our music describes this state. "

It was important for the band to work on their pieces together in the rehearsal room, mainly by jamming together on the basis of designs by Michael Melchers. Only important transitions were made very consciously. What was important to the tape about the result was that it “wasn't ironed out smoothly, sanded and drowned out with filters and triggers until it had no soul. It has rough edges. "

reception

On the occasion of the re-release of Kalt und Geisterstadt , Thomas Sonder spoke in the Metal Hammer of a “mighty Doom / Post Rock event” and rated it with 6 out of 7 possible points. In the vote The best of 2010 , Omega Massif was voted one of the best in the post-hardcore genre by the editors, Melanie Aschenbrenner wrote on the occasion of the successor, taking stock of the general criticism, of one of the "most amazing, imaginative, most durable debuts in recent years" . The second album Karpatia was also well received.
