Omnibus choir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Omnibus Choir was a children's choir in Berlin that existed from 1975 to 2016 and was known for its cheeky, sometimes thoughtful songs, which were often composed especially for the choir. The name was derived from the Latin omnibus 'allen' or 'for all' (dative plural of omnis).

In 1975, Hugo Jahns founded the Omnibus Choir in the House of Young Talents , which was then officially called the Omnibus Pioneer Choir . At the beginning he was supported by Bärbel Plöckinger (organization) and Karl-Heinz Tetzner (events) as well as Stefan Lasch (junior research group). The choir was initially a pure young choir, consisting of 30 small singers between 7 and 11 years of age. The model was the French choir Les Poppys . Not well-behaved boys singing, but happy Berlin boys who inspire the audience with current songs, often specially written for the choir, that was Jahns' concern.

The first appearance of the Omnibus Choir , which was broadcast by the Berliner Rundfunk , took place in February 1975 in the congress hall on Alexanderplatz . In the same year the omnibus choir sang the theme song in Heiner Carow's film Ikarus . The choir was in demand for numerous events throughout the GDR and for radio and television appearances. The choir was initially accompanied by the Kaleidoskop group . There were performances and radio / record recordings with numerous GDR artists, including Dean Reed , Holger Biege , Monika Herz , Die Roten Guitars and Gruppe 4PS . In the Omnibus Choir sing meant twice weekly three-hour sample, multi-day trips and samples on weekends gigs or studio. Boys who broke their voices could stay in the choir and received music theory lessons from Hugo Jahns. Later they strengthened the lower voices.

In 1979, the choir was part of the television production Eine Welt aus Fun , in which René Siodla even got an acting solo role. In 1982 the choir sang another film score, this time for the DEFA film Zille und ick (1982/83). The omnibus choir was a guest in all of the major GDR television shows . a. in the kettle colorful , the golden note , round or everything sings . Before 1990, the songs for the omnibus choir were composed by Horst Schmäke, Eberhard Mende, Siegfried Schulte and others. The texts came u. a. by Wolfgang Brandenstein , Monika Jacobs and Dieter Schneider .

From 1990 the omnibus choir was also open to girls. The House of Young Talents was wound up in 1991. This also meant that state support for the choir and the choir director was no longer required. Rehearsals could be maintained through the newly founded association Omnibus-Chor eV (later Omnibus-Chöre eV ), and sponsorship money could also be acquired. Hugo Jahns received from the Senator for Culture Ulrich Roloff-Momin the promise to continue rehearsing with the choir in the house, which has now been renamed Podewil . Nevertheless, the rooms were given to the Omnibus Choir at the end of the 1990s. The choir found a new domicile in the neighboring parish hall of the Parochial Church .

In the 1990s, the omnibus choir had performances a. a. in the Schauspielhaus , in the Palais am Funkturm , in the FEZ or in the Deutschlandhalle . In 1994 the former choir members formed the Omnibus Youth Choir . In 2000 the Omnibus Choir recorded a Christmas CD with Frank Zander . After 1990, numerous songs by the Omnibus Choir were written by Hugo Jahns - both the compositions and the texts. He also arranged a number of traditionals for the choir. After the omnibus choir's rehearsal rooms in Waisenstrasse were terminated in 2008, there were no more rehearsals and performances. The omnibus choir ceased to exist. In 2016, one year after the death of Hugo Jahns, the Omnibus-Chöre eV was dissolved.

Some former omnibus choir singers embarked on a career as a musician, such as André Siodla , Patrick Borde or Detlef Ebeneow. Jörg Thieme became an actor.
