The Omul or Baikal-Omul ( Coregonus migratorius , in the local language Омуль байкальский ) is a representative of the species-rich genus Coregonus within the salmon fish (Salmonidae). It lives exclusively in Lake Baikal as well as in some connected waters ( Kitschera , Angara , Tschiwyrkui , Bargusin , Selenga ) and in Chöwsgöl Nuur . Accordingly, it is an endemic species of the region.

Subspecies

A distinction is made between three different morphological forms of the omul, for which it has not yet been clarified whether they represent genetically isolated populations . There are studies by Burnham-Curtis et al. (2002), however, no genetic markers could be localized. The authors emphasize, however, that there is clear evidence that the morphological variation can be explained by a zonal distribution of the omuls within Lake Baikal, which consists of three basins.

Way of life

The omul feeds on plankton and smaller animals.

use

Selling omul as food fish

It is an important food fish for the region and often forms the basis of life for the rural population in particular. Like most other members of the Coregonus genus , it is tasty and can be eaten in every conceivable way of preparation. Even the Omulkaviar is considered a delicacy . In addition to the consumption around the lake, export to western Russia is also important.
