Only Office is an open-source - Office package , the Ascensio System, headquartered in Riga was developed, Latvia. The solution includes online document editors, a platform for document and project management , a CRM system and an e-mail client .

OnlyOffice is delivered as a SaaS solution or as an installation for provision in the private network. The system is accessed via a private online portal.

The FreeOffice Personal solution is available for individual use.

As part of the official partnerships, OnlyOffice works closely with Nextcloud , ownCloud , Seafile , Pydio , eXo Platform and XWiki.

Functions

OnlyOffice's interface is divided into several modules: Documents, CRM, Projects, E-Mail, Community, Calendar and Chat.

The Documents module is a central document management system . It allows the management of access rights with four types of rights (Full Access, Review, Read and Deny Access); Manage versions and revisions of documents; Integration of third-party cloud storage systems such as Box, Dropbox , Google Drive , Nextcloud , OneDrive or OwnCloud . An integrated media player enables audio and video files to be played back directly in the cloud (support for various audio and video formats).

The Projects module is used to manage project phases: planning, team management and delegation of tasks, monitoring and reporting. The module also contains a Gantt chart to illustrate the development of the projects in different phases. The module is supplemented by the "OnlyOffice Projects" app for iOS .

The CRM module enables the management of the customer database, creation of sales opportunities and tasks. This module also offers the option of creating invoices.

The e-mail module combines the mail server for creating your own domain mailboxes and the mail aggregator for the central administration of several mailboxes.

The calendar module enables the creation of personal and company-internal events, deadlines in projects and CRM, and the sending and receiving of invitations and events. The calendar can be integrated with third party calendars that support iCal .

The Community module offers functions for the company network: surveys, polls, keeping blogs and forums, breaking news, bookmarks and messengers.

OnlyOffice's user interface is available in 25 languages.

The solution is technically based on three components: Document Server, Community Server and Mail Server.

The Document Server contains editors for texts, tables and presentations and is written in JavaScript with an HTML5 canvas element .

The Community Server includes all of the OnlyOffice functional modules. It is written in ASP.NET for Windows and in Mono for Linux and distributions.

The mail server includes a number of components that enable corporate mailboxes to be created using standard or custom domain names. The mail server is based on the iRedMail package, which consists of Postfix , Dovecot , SpamAssassin , ClamAV , OpenDKIM, Fail2ban .

OnlyOffice online editors

OnlyOffice contains an online office application suitable for use in a browser. The online office suite combines text, table and presentation editors that provide the same functions as Microsoft desktop editors ( Word , Excel and PowerPoint ). Editors allow you to collaborate on documents, comment and chat in real time; provide revision history and mail merge.

The beta version of OnlyOffice online editors was presented at Cebit 2012 in Hanover . The product was in JavaScript using the canvas element of HTML5 written.

According to the company blog, the technology preserves the original formatting regardless of the browser and operating system. The presence of the canvas element enables some functions that were previously only available in desktop applications to be added to online editors: support for sophisticated formatting; multi-page documents.

The basic formatting in OnlyOffice document editors is based on the Office Open XML (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) file format . Other types of supported formats (ODT, DOC, RTF, EPUB, MHT, HTML, HTM, ODS, XLS, CSV, ODP, PPT, DOTX, XLTX, POTX, OTT, OTS, OTP and PDF-A) are using internal conversion processed in DOCX, XLSX or PPTX.

The functionality of the suite can be expanded with plugins (additional modules). Users can choose from the existing list of plugins or create their own applications using the provided API .

Online editors can be integrated into an application written in any programming language: .Net (C #), Node.js , Java , PHP , Ruby , etc.

OnlyOffice desktop editors

OnlyOffice desktop editors is an offline version of the OnlyOffice editing suite. Desktop application supports functions for joint editing when connected to the ONLYOFFICE portal, Nextcloud or ownCloud .

Desktop editors is a cross-platform solution that is available for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP, 2003, Vista (both 32-bit and 64-bit), Debian , Ubuntu and derivatives, RPM-based Linux Distributive, Mac OS 10.10 or higher is available. There is also a portable version. OnlyOffice Desktop Editors can be installed as a Flatpak , Snap package and AppImage .

Editors are compatible with MS Office (OOXML) and OpenDocument (ODF) formats and support DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF, TXT, PDF, HTML, EPUB, XPS, DjVu, XLS, XLSX, ODS, CSV, PPT, PPTX, ODP , DOTX, XLTX, POTX, OTT, OTS, OTP and PDF-A.

As in the Online Editing-Suite, the basic toolset of OnlyOffice desktop editors can be expanded with the help of plugins.

Desktop editors are available under AGPL v3 license and are ready for personal and commercial use.

OnlyOffice editors are also available as mobile applications for iOS and Android . The application is called "ONLYOFFICE Documents".

At the beginning of 2019, OnlyOffice announced the first developer preview for the end-to-end encryption of documents, which contains blockchain technology and is integrated into the functionality of the desktop suite.

Nextcloud / ownCloud integration

In February 2017 OnlyOffice released the integration app for Nextcloud and ownCloud . It enables online editing of office documents (text documents, spreadsheets and presentations) within the interface of Nextcloud and ownCloud. The desktop suite can also be connected to these platforms if OnlyOffice is integrated. By integrating them into one of these services, ONLYOFFICE editors can be installed as components for Univention Corporate Server .

Similar applications have been developed for SharePoint , Confluence and Alfresco .

The application is licensed under the AGPL like other client / server solutions from OnlyOffice and is available on GitHub .

history

  • In 2009, the software developers, led by Lev Bannov, started a project called TeamLab. TeamLab is a collaboration platform with tools for social networks (blog, forum, wiki, bookmarks).
  • In March 2012 Teamlab presented the first HTML5 based document editor at the CeBIT .
  • In July 2014, TeamLab Office was officially renamed OnlyOffice. The source code of the product has been published on Sourceforge and Github under AGPLv3.
  • In March 2016, the desktop application - OnlyOffice Desktop Editors for PC or Mac, was released, which positions itself as an open source alternative to Microsoft Office.
  • According to project developers, the number of users exceeded two million in January 2017.
  • The app for integration with ownCloud / Nextcloud was launched in February 2017.
  • In February 2018, OnlyOffice Desktop Editors became available as a snap package.
  • In January 2019, OnlyOffice announced the first developer preview for end-to-end encryption of documents.
