The tasks of an OTA include the preparation of the instruments and devices before the operation, the instrumentation and jump activities during the operation as well as the disposal and sterilization of the instruments after the operation.

When working in the operating room , all employees wear so-called area clothing ( tunic , trousers, as well as a hood and mouth and nose protection ). Those directly involved in the operation (surgeon, assistants and instrument operators) also wear sterile gloves and a sterile gown.

Surgical assistants can also work outside of the operating room in other functional areas, e.g. B. in endoscopy, ambulance or emergency room and in the central sterile supply department (CSSD).
