Opuntia chihuahuensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet chihuahuensis means 'from the Chihuahua location in northern Mexico'.

Opuntia chihuahuensis grows low shrubby and forms broad groups. The greenish yellow obovate shoot sections are 10 to 15 centimeters long. The conical leaf rudiments are up to 9 millimeters long. The small areoles are 2 to 4 centimeters apart. The one to three protruding and sometimes slightly flattened thorns are dark and reach a length of 4 to 6 centimeters. Occasionally they are accompanied by one or two white thorns.

The yellow flowers , reddish at their base, are 6 to 7 centimeters long. The red or yellowish fruits are pear-shaped and 1 to 4 centimeters in length.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia chihuahuensis is common in the Mexican states of Sonora , Chihuahua , Durango, and Zacatecas .

The first description was in 1909 by Joseph Nelson Rose . A nomenclatory synonym is Opuntia phaeacantha var. Chihuahuensis (Rose) Brav o (1974).
