The orange-striped triggerfish ( Balistapus undulatus ) is a species of fish found in the Red Sea and the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa and KwaZulu-Natals to Japan , New Caledonia , the Line Islands , the Marquesas and the Tuamotu Archipelago .

features

The animals reach an average length of 26 cm. The maximum length is 30 cm. Their basic color is green to dark brown, the sides of the body and the sides of the head behind the eyes are patterned with the eponymous, curved orange stripes. Some blue and orange stripes run from the mouth to below the base of the pectoral fin. There is a strong black spot on the flattened tail fin stalk. The rays of the dorsal and anal fin and the pectoral fins are orange. The scales of the tail stalk have two longitudinal rows of long, backward-pointing spines. The scales are enlarged at the base of the pectoral fin and directly behind the gill opening. The caudal fin is orange and slightly rounded.

Way of life

The orange-striped triggerfish live in coral-rich deep lagoons and outer reefs at depths of 2 to 50 meters. It forms territory and feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as echinoderms , molluscs , sponges and hydrozoans , as well as on algae and fish. To reproduce, the fish gather in groups in reef channels with high currents and spawn in pits in the sand or in the coral break. The larvae hatch at night.
