The orange-stripe butterflyfish ( Chaetodon ornatissimus ) can be found from Sri Lanka and the Maldives via Micronesia and the Great Barrier Reef to Hawaii , the Marquesas and Ducie . To the north it occurs to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa Iti .
It prefers coral-rich lagoons and outer reefs , where it can be found in shallow water up to a depth of 15 meters. Young fish live alone and stay between branched hard corals . Adult fish live in pairs or in small groups, solitary animals join Meyer's butterfly fish ( Chaetodon meyeri ), which has a similar body drawing. The orange stripe butterflyfish is distinctive because of its orange stripes on the sides.
The animals become 18 centimeters long. As a nutrition specialist, it feeds on coral polyps and is therefore not suitable for keeping in saltwater aquariums. He barely survives more than a couple of weeks.
