Orbán von Nagylúcse or Urban Dóczi (* 15th century in Nagy-Luche , Hungary , † 1493 in Erlau ) was the royal treasurer, crown guardian and governor of Hungary. He was also bishop of Raab and Erlau. From 1488 to 1490 he was administrator of the diocese of Vienna .

Life

Urban Dóczi was born in Nagy-Luche, near the island of Schütt in Hungary.

Matthias Corvinus appointed the diplomat as royal treasurer, crown guardian and in 1481 as governor. Matthias nominated him Bishop of Raab in 1483 and of Erlau in 1486 . Dóczi helped Matthias in military operations such as the siege of Hainburg with 5000 men and large sums of money as well as in the capture of Vienna and Wiener Neustadt . In 1470 there were differences of opinion between Emperor Friedrich III. and Matthias Corvinus, which resulted in a formal declaration of war in 1477. The Turkish war , however, occupied him until the death of Sultan Mehmed II in 1481. Matthias concluded an armistice with the Ottomans in 1483 and began the battle for Vienna. In autumn 1482 Vienna was besieged by the Hungarians. In 1484 the Hungarians took Bruck an der Leitha and besieged Korneuburg . In 1483 the Viennese had to pay tribute to the Hungarians in order to bring in the grape harvest undisturbed. The citizens of Vienna closed without the consent of Emperor Friedrich III. together with the University of Vienna on May 21, 1485 an armistice with Matthias. According to a report by the humanist Wolfgang Lazius , Matthias intended to abolish the Vienna diocese. In 1485 or 1486 he is said to have approached the cathedral chapter with this request .

After the death of the administrator Bernhard von Rohr , he changed his mind and appointed the Bishop of Erlau Urban Dóczi as the new administrator of Vienna. Pope Innocent VIII confirmed it in a bull published in Vienna on April 20, 1488 . From the work of Dóczi in his new diocese of Vienna only one decree from 1489 is known, which declared the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary a public holiday. This day had previously only been celebrated in the choir of St. Stephen's Cathedral and by the University of Vienna . After the death of his protector King Matthias on April 6, 1490 - Tuesday of Holy Week - at the age of 46, Dóczi gave up his administration in Vienna after only two years and went back to Hungary, where he died in 1493 in his diocese of Erlau.
