The Orchester philharmonique de Strasbourg ( Orchester national since 1997 ) is the symphony and opera orchestra of the city of Strasbourg in Alsace . It was founded in 1855 and is the oldest orchestra in France.

It reached its heyday at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century when Alsace-Lorraine was a German empire . After the initial reorganization, the imperial administration supported the orchestra, which became a showcase for German musical culture. Formative personalities of this time were among others the general music director Hans Pfitzner and the chief conductor Otto Klemperer . Several concerts during this period were conducted by Richard Strauss or Gustav Mahler . Other well-known chief or guest conductors included Charles Münch , Wilhelm Furtwängler , Hermann Scherchen , George Szell (successor to Klemperer), Hans Rosbaud , Ernest Bour , Theodor Guschlbauer and Marc Albrecht from Strasbourg . The orchestra has been led by Marko Letonja since September 2012 .

The main orchestra currently has 110 musicians, and other musicians from the university orchestra are used for monumental works from the late romantic era.

Discography

Numerous recordings were made under the direction of Alain Lombard in the 1970s and early 1980s, including high-quality opera recordings for EMI . This policy was not continued under his successors Theodor Guschlbauer and Jan Latham-Koenig . Recordings still appeared regularly, but - also because of the falling demand - less often and with less well-known labels. The orchestra has also been involved in DVD opera recordings since the late 1990s.
