The Organization for International Economic Relations ( OIER ) is a global network.

history

Founded in Vienna in 1947 as the Danube European Institute , its initiators were the then Trade Minister of the Republic of Austria , Eduard Heinl , and subsequently the Austrian Vice Chancellor Fritz Bock and personalities of contemporary history from Europe and overseas. The organization created a platform from which trade and economic relationships could be established across borders and emotions.

Beyond its original objective, the Danube European Institute and today's OiER has become a global forum for business, science and politics. With the establishment of the International Council (international board of trustees) and foreign representatives in 60 countries around the world, its international character is evident.

In addition to annual business conferences, the organization began organizing cooperation congresses in the 1970s , also in collaboration with other institutions such as the Club of Rome , the Stanford Research Institute California , international business organizations and chambers of industry and commerce. These were initiatives that made the institute a trailblazer for the expansion and promotion of economic processes. Due to its status and value, the organization has had consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations ( ECOSOC ) since 1972 and with the European Council since 1973. In 2011, the OiER received consultative status at UNIDO .

In order to serve an even broader field, the OiER founded the United Global Academy (UGA) in 2004, which is intended to serve as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the fields of science, business and government.

Over the years, various other institutions developed from the circle of the Danube European Institute, such as the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM), which has turned to the field of culture, the Vienna International Forum for Conferences and at the time also the Austrian one Canal and shipping association that campaigned for the expansion of the Danube as an international waterway.

The focus of the work of OiER is on the recognition of trends in a global context and important future topics from the areas of sustainability, future viability, innovation, communication and mobility.

Members

The OIER is actively involved in many international meetings, symposia and events with presidents and heads of government, their ambassadors, as well as with international economic and financial experts. Many representatives from government, administration and diplomacy, functionaries of business organizations, company owners and top managers are among the members. As speakers and guests at the events, the OIER Presidium and Executive Board welcomed personalities from politics and business. These include u. a. UN Secretaries- General , Presidents of the World Bank , Directors-General of the IMF - International Monetary Fund , Heads and Members of Government, EU Presidents and Commissioners, and high-level company representatives.

The president of the OIER is Christoph Leitl , the president of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, the chairman of the international board of trustees is Günther Granser , managing partner of the ICR GmbH. Further members of the Presidium are Donatella Ceccarelli , Chairwoman of the Board of Management of Flick Privatstiftung, General Director Johann Marihart , Chair of the Board of Management of Agrana Beteiligungs AG, Friedrich Hecker , Trustee of Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Inc. USA, Erich Hampel , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Unicredit Bank Austria AG and Gerhard Wildmoser , President of the National Economic Society.

Forum of encounter

Many international organizations, like OIER, have their headquarters in Vienna, which provides a platform for a complex, functioning network there. It is a forum for encounters that provides information from experts on current issues in business, politics and science, establishes contacts that lead to concrete cooperation in the economic field and greater understanding in a global context. The OIER received confirmation of its international activities and expansion of the scope of action by being granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, which it has held since 1972.

United Global Academy (UGA)

After basic research, in 2005 OIER initiated the founding of the United Global Academy (UGA) together with Daimler AG , Karl Franzens University , Stellenbosch University and other international scientific institutions . As an inter-university organization, it deals with the exchange of knowledge and topics such as future viability, mobility, innovation, sustainability and social responsibility. The UGA cooperates with globally active economic groups and international organizations such as the UN, EU and World Bank and thus represents an expansion of the activities of the OIER.

Merits in the field of international relations

The OIER and its officials have been honored and honored for their services in the field of international relations. At a meeting in New York, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan particularly emphasized the merits in the cooperation between West and East. On the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the OIER, keynote speaker Klaus Kinkel , then Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, spoke about the significant contribution of the organization to European integration and the important part in the historic turning point in Europe.
