The oriental iris ( Iris orientalis ) is a type of plant from the genus of irises ( Iris ) within the family of the iridaceae .
features
The oriental iris is a perennial herbaceous plant that forms rhizomes as persistence organs. It reaches heights of growth of 50 to 80 (150) centimeters. The leaves are 1 to 2 inches wide. The 2 to 3 flowers are white. The plate of the hanging leaves is turned back, 2.5 to 4 centimeters wide, as long as the nail and has a yellow stain. The standards are erect, up to 8.5 inches long and colored white with a yellow central stripe.
The flowering period extends from June to July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
Occurrence
The oriental iris occurs in north-east Greece as well as west, central and south Turkey in moist meadows, swamps and irrigation channels at altitudes of 150 to 1400 meters.

The oriental iris is rarely used as an ornamental plant for borders and at water basins. It has been in culture since 1760 at the latest. There are few varieties.
