The hurricane Andrea moved on 3–6. January 2012 over Western and Central Europe. It had no serious consequences, but was the strongest Western Orcan of the 2011/2012 winter season. Together with the two subsequent lows Bibiana and Celine , it brought enormous amounts of snow locally.

The low Andrea formed as an Iceland low on December 30, 2011, crossed southern Scandinavia on a typical train track , and disintegrated on January 8 in the Novaya Zemlya area . The associated low front crossed the region from northwest to southeast, the wind was blowing mainly from the northwest.

In the area of ​​the hurricane low there were sudden drops in temperature , which, however, were moderate at around five degrees Celsius. In many regions the hurricane was accompanied by thunderstorms and heavy rains, some of which fell as snow and led to large snow drifts . In some regions, heavy rainfall led to floods. There were significantly increased flood levels on the North and Baltic Seas . In the mountains, from the Alps to the low mountain range, gale force gusts with top speeds of over 170 and top gusts of over 200 kilometers per hour were measured. At the weather station at the Konkordiahütte even a gust of 270 km / h was registered.

Andrea moved two more deep cores: Bibiana on the same track, weather-effective around the 7th, and Celine moving to Central Europe on the 8th / 9th. January. In the Tyrolean Alps in particular, there was enormous snow mass.

Damage

Overall, the hurricane turned out to be less than announced in the storm warnings. The German weather service gave the all-clear for most regions of Germany on January 5th. Towards evening the wind had dropped significantly almost everywhere.

Serious damage was also reported from Great Britain , Belgium and France in particular . There was one fatality in Germany .

In the Arlberg and Paznaun area around Galtür , when the holiday shift changed on the weekend of 7/8 January, including numerous ski vacationers due to the risk of avalanches.
