The Orsova (II) was a passenger ship that entered service in 1954 for the British shipping company Orient Steam Navigation Company . She was used for trips from Great Britain to Australia for the next twenty years before she was retired after the 1973 season. The Orsova arrived in Taiwan in February 1974 to be scrapped .

history

The Orsova was built under the shipyard number 1021 at Vickers-Armstrongs in Barrow-in-Furness and launched on May 14, 1953. In March 1954 the commissioning on the route from Southampton to Sydney followed .

On May 24, 1956, the ship ran aground in the Bay of Port Phillip , but could be towed free again after twelve hours without damage to the hull. In 1966, the Orsova moved with the other ships of the shipping company to the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company , after they had bought the Orient Steam Navigation Company.

The Orsova stayed on the route to Australia for its entire service life. It was only used for a short time in the spring of 1969 when Gulf Oil chartered the ship and used it off Whiddy Island as accommodation for the workers of an oil rig under construction .

As the liner service to Australia became more and more unprofitable in the 1970s, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company decommissioned all liners one by one. The Orsova finished her last voyage in late 1973. She was then sold to Kaohsiung for scrapping , where she arrived on February 14, 1974.
