Rice fish ( Oryzias ) are a genus of small South and East Asian freshwater fish from the order of the garfish-like (Beloniformes). The distribution area of the genus extends from India and Sri Lanka in the west to Japan and Korea in the north and in the east to Timor and Sulawesi , where there are numerous endemic species. Synonyms of the genus are Horaichthys Kulkarni, 1940 and Xenopoecilus Regan, 1911 .

features

Rice fish grow to be 1.6 to 6.5 cm long and have a more or less elongated body. As typical fish living close to the surface, they have a straight back line, are more or less deep-bellied with a straight edge of the abdomen, have an upper mouth with a non-protruding (non-protractile) upper jaw and a dorsal fin lying far back. The pectoral fins are relatively large and stand high up. In most cases the fish are inconspicuously gray or silvery colored or transparent. Noticeable colors are usually missing (exception: the neon rice fish ( Oryzias woworae )). The sexes are the same size and difficult to distinguish.

Way of life

Rice carp live mainly near the coast, some species also inland, in flooded rice fields, ponds, lakes and river sections with shallow water (20 cm to 1 m) and in small pools of water. Populations living near the coast can also tolerate light brackish water . The water temperatures in the residential waters are in most cases very high (up to 30 ° C). Rice fish are predominantly schooling fish.

Rice fish spawn at night or early in the morning. The eggs stick with filaments to the genital opening in front of the anal fin of the female and are only stripped off aquatic plants after hours or days or are carried along until the young fish hatch. The slowly growing juvenile fish hatch after 10 to 18 days and then live on the surface of the water, constantly moving with eel-like, meandering movements.
