Oscar Alder (born November 7, 1870 in Herisau , † February 10, 1943 in Herisau; resident in Herisau) was a Swiss publicist and editor-in-chief from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Oscar Alder was the son of Robert Alder, businessman and partner in the textile trading company Alder & Meyer in Herisau, and Anna Ida Alder, nee Wirth. In 1902 he married Katharina Zwicky, nurse and daughter of Kaspar Zwicky. At a young age he worked as a master upholsterer in Herisau and Zurich . From 1906 to 1916 he was administrator in the warehouse of the Otto Lobeck company in Winkeln (today St. Gallen ).

His journalistic activity began in 1911 with the processing of the country chronicle in the Appenzell Yearbooks (until 1941). From 1920 to 1943 Oscar Alder was its editor-in-chief. Before that, he received the post of editor-in-chief of the Appenzeller Anzeiger and the New Appenzeller Calendar (so-called Häädler Calendar ) in Heiden and held this position from 1916 to 1941. Oscar Alder led the Appenzeller Anzeiger along the lines of the Progressive Citizens' Party, later the FDP , and in the 1930s stood in opposition to the Democrat of the National Council, Hans Konrad Sonderegger von Heiden. He did autodidactic studies in local history with numerous publications, especially in the Appenzell Yearbooks. From 1919 to 1931 he worked as an actuary of the Progressive Citizens' Party of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Later, from 1917 to 1922, he was an actuary of the State Economic Commission. From 1937 to 1941 he was President of the Eastern Switzerland Press Association and from 1916 to 1943 a member of the board of the Appenzell Non-Profit Society (AGG).
