Oskar Keller (pharmacist)

Oskar Keller (born August 14, 1877 in Stockach ; † March 17, 1959 in Jena ) was a German pharmacist , food chemist and university professor .

Life

After finishing his schooling, the cellar in 1896 with the Abitur at Domgymnasium Magdeburg ended, he learned in the Hirsch Pharmacy in Halle (Saale) , the pharmacy . After his apprenticeship, he conditioned in Bonn , Winterthur and Marburg and in 1901 began studying pharmacy in Halle. He soon moved to Marburg, where he passed the pharmaceutical state examination in 1902. He then passed the chemical association examination in 1903, his doctorate in 1904 and the main examination as a food chemist in 1905. In 1908, Keller completed his habilitation and after a short period as head of department at the Chemical Institute of the University of Giessen, he returned to the Marburg Institute, where he was department head from 1909 to 1918 and was appointed associate professor in 1910. In 1918, Keller was offered a position at the Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry in Jena and was appointed full professor there in 1923. He headed this institute until 1952. In 1953 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

research

As a student of EA Schmidt, Keller first turned to alkaloid research and examined alkaloids of the Nigella species and the Helleboreen . Keller is also responsible for fundamental work on the Ipecacuanha alkaloids. Later work dealt with other herbal ingredients, analytical tasks and problems of practical pharmacy. Both pharmacy and food chemistry concerned Keller's work on the iodine content of plants and the influence of iodine fertilization on iodine storage capacity. From 1947 to 1952 he published the “Central Pharmaceutical Hall”.
