Oskar Simony


Oskar Simony (born April 23, 1852 in Vienna ; † April 6, 1915 ibid) was an Austrian mathematician , physicist and university teacher at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna.
Life
Oskar Simony was the son of the geographer and alpine researcher Friedrich Simony . After studying mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna (doctorate in 1874), he became a private lecturer in mathematics and theoretical physics there.
After his habilitation at the University of Vienna in 1875, he worked in various functions at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. In 1890 he was appointed full professor for mathematics, physics and mechanics. At the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, he made a special mark as a benefactor of the students. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
After 37 years of teaching and research at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, he retired. Then he completed his life's work “Calculating prime numbers for the law of success of real prime numbers”.
In 1915 Oskar Simony suffered a stroke which resulted in right-sided paralysis. On April 6, 1915, he threw himself to his death from the window of his second floor apartment in Vienna. His remains rest in a grave of honor in the Pötzleinsdorfer Friedhof in Vienna's 18th district. His estate is in the library of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
Expeditions and research trips
Oskar Simony took part in several expeditions and undertook extensive research trips. With the butterfly collections gathered on his travels, he went down in the history of the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
Honors
- Oskar-Simony-Strasse is named after him in Vienna's 14th district.
- In 1960 the former Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Studentenheim and later the university building of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna on Peter-Jordan-Strasse in Vienna's 18th district was officially named "Oskar Simony House" in honor of Oskar Simony.
- The University Library for Natural Resources and Life Sciences at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna honored Oskar Simony in 2015 with the design of an exhibition (exhibition title: "Oskar Simony - Mathematician, Researcher, Benefactor").
