The East American dog tooth ( Erythronium americanum ) is a species of the lily family (Liliaceae).

The East American dog tooth is a perennial, herbaceous bulb plant that reaches heights of 10 to 18 (probably rarely up to 30) centimeters. It forms runners. The leaves are 8 to 23 inches long and elliptical-lanceolate. The flowers are solitary. The tepals are 20 to 33 millimeters long and yellow in color, their top is speckled brown or purple.

The flowering period extends from April to May.

Occurrence

The East American dog tooth occurs in warm temperate to temperate eastern North America from Georgia and Alabama to Newfoundland and southern Ontario. The species grows on freshly moist to freshly dry hillside forests. It can often be found on clay and on water.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Erythronium americanum subsp. americanum : It occurs from eastern Canada to the northern, central and eastern United States. It has the chromosome number 2n = 48.
  • Erythronium americanum subsp. harperi (W.Wolf) CRParks & Hardin : It occurs in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
