The Osterbach is a 5.9 km long orographically right or eastern tributary of the Weser in the East Westphalian district of Minden-Lübbecke in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

The small river has no clear source . The headwaters are in the Lerbeck district of the East Westphalian city of Porta Westfalica .

The Osterbach rises on the northern slope of the Weser Mountains in Lerbeck. There, the agricultural areas are used for growing crops . For drainage same many are there trenches drawn that drain the area to the north. The Osterbach is the main ditch for this drainage. It flows over the Minden district of Meißen over the eastern urban areas from Minden to the Weser . In Meißen it is closely related to the Röthekuhlen , which were maintained until 1936 . There flax was watered and the necessary water was taken from the river.

During the construction of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft line , which is located there on a high embankment, a passage was built for the Osterbach south of the Minden station and the station fortress so that it can flow to the limits of the bridgehead . He circles this in the north until it flows into the Weser at river kilometer 202 north of the Jahn sports field.

In the inventory of the Water Framework Directive from 2005, the river was classified with a water quality of level 5, and thus the worst classification.

The city of Minden has included the renaturation of the Osterbach in its plans as part of an overall concept with the working title “New Life on the Coal Bank”. Implementation should take place in 2020 at the earliest.

Flood

When the Weser floods , the outflowing water from the Osterbach is backed up and due to the low gradient of the Osterbach, the flood can crawl up the river. The Weser meadows under the colorful bridge on the right bank of the Weser are regularly flooded. But the meadows east of the railway embankment are also affected by the flood.

Landscape protection

The river runs through several landscape protection areas , which are located south of the village of Dankersen and in the meadow landscape of the Weser.

history

The Osterbach flows into the Weser at kilometer 202. In the Weserwiesen on the right bank of the Weser, the Ludwigsbad natural swimming pool was built in 1926 between the Jahn sports field and the Kleinbahnbrücke . The necessary water was taken from the river. The Ludwigsbad in Minden had a 50-meter lane and a corresponding water requirement. The bath was filled in in the 1950s.
