Osvaldo Héctor Cruz (born May 29, 1931 ) is a former Argentine soccer player. He took part in the 1958 World Cup with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Osvaldo Cruz began his football career in 1951 with CA Independiente in Avellaneda , an industrial suburb of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires . At Independiente he played with other Argentinian football greats of the time such as Ernesto Grillo , José Varacka and David Acevedo . Cruz won a national title during his early stint at Independiente from 1951 to 1960. In 1960, the team took first place in the Primera División with two points ahead of CA River Plate from Buenos Aires. After winning the title, Cruz left Independiente and Argentina and joined Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras from the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo . He stayed there for only one year, but also won a national championship as Palmeiras in 1960 , the Taça Brasil in the final against Fortaleza EC won. He then went back to Independiente for a short time, but only switched to Unión Española in Chile's capital Santiago a year later . There he let his active career end until 1964 without winning another title.

National team

In the Argentine national soccer team , Osvaldo Cruz made 21 missions between 1953 and 1958, in which he scored three goals, which means a rather meager yield for an attacker. From Argentina coach Guillermo Stábile he was appointed to the South American squad for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden . At the tournament he was used in two of the three Argentina games. He played both in the 1: 6 defeat against Czechoslovakia and in the 1: 3 defeat against Germany in the Argentine team, but could not score a goal. Overall, the Argentine team disappointed at the World Cup, because they were eliminated after the preliminary round. Before that, Osvaldo Cruz had already participated in the South American Championships in Chile in 1955 and in Peru in 1957 . Argentina was the winning team both times. At the Copa America in 1955 , they finished first in front of hosts Chile and in 1957 in front of Brazil .
