Oswald Collmann

Oswald Georg Wilhelm Collmann (born June 26, 1845 in Marburg , † August 1, 1912 in Bad Altheide ) was a German librarian , teacher , philologist and historian .

Life

Born as the son of a senior teacher, he attended high school in Marburg until 1860 and then went to sea as a cabin boy on a merchant ship . After just a few weeks, he turned his back on seafaring and worked in a bank in Frankfurt am Main . In 1861 he went back home and graduated from high school in 1862. He studied history and modern languages ​​in Marburg. During his studies in 1862 he became a member of the Arminia Marburg fraternity . Without having passed his exam, in 1866 he became an assistant teacher at the secondary school 1st order in Meseritz . In 1868 he made his state examination in Breslau and received a teaching certificate for English , French , German and Latin . In 1868 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1869 he went to the Saalschule / Realschule in Erfurt . In 1870 he went to France to study and barely escaped capture. In 1871 he was a teacher at the high school in Naumburg an der Saale , where he was promoted to senior teacher in 1874 . In 1877 he went to the secondary school 1st order in Poznan , where he received the title of professor in 1893 . As he became more and more hard of hearing, he retired in 1902. In 1902 he became the first librarian director of the Raczyński library , which caused protests among the founding family because he was the first director not from Poznan and was German. Collmann also worked as a translator . He died on a vacation in 1912 and was buried in Poznan.
