Otakar Odložilík

Otakar Odložilík (born January 12, 1899 in Kostelec u Holešova , Moravia ; † July 14, 1973 in Bohinj , Yugoslavia ) was a Czech historian and archivist . The focus of his work was Protestantism in Bohemia and Moravia.

Life

Odložilík attended high schools in Přerov (1910-1914), Valašské Meziříčí (1915) and Kroměříž (1916-1917). He then studied history from 1918 and 1922 at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University under Václav Novotný . At the same time he attended the State Archives School from 1920 to 1923. In 1923 he received his doctorate with the work Jednota bratří Habrovanských ( Habrowan Brethren ). In the same year he took up a position as archivist at the Czechoslovak Ministry of the Interior. In 1925 he was with the work Z počátku husitství na Moravě. Šimon z Tišnova and Jan Vavřinec z Račic [From the beginnings of Hussiteism in Moravia. Simon von Tischnowitz and Johann Laurentius von Ratschitz] qualified as a professor at the Charles University. Since 1926 Odložilík taught Czechoslovak history as a lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University. In 1934 he was appointed associate professor.

After the German occupation of the country, Odložilík emigrated to the USA in 1939, where he worked successively at the University of Colorado at Boulder , University of Pennsylvania , Northwestern University and Columbia University . After the end of the Second World War Odložilík returned to Prague and from 1945 taught as a full professor at Charles University.

In 1948, after the Communists came to power, Odložilík accepted an invitation from his friend Prof. SH Thomson as a visiting professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He later taught at the University of Kansas and from 1949 as a professor of Czechoslovak history at the Masaryk Chair at Columbia University. Odložilík received US citizenship in 1950. In 1955 he was appointed professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he worked until his retirement in 1969. He died in 1973 during a research trip to Europe. His urn was buried in the George Washington Memorial Park in Whitemarch Township, as requested.
