Otthein Duke
Otthein Herzog (born September 25, 1944 ) is a German computer scientist.
biography
Herzog studied from 1966 to 1972 at the Leibniz Kolleg of the University of Tübingen , electrical engineering at the University of Stuttgart , computer science at the University of Karlsruhe, and computer science and mathematics at the University of Bonn and graduated in Bonn with a diploma thesis (and a patent based on it) on the synthesis of cellular cells Networks . He was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. PhD at the University of Dortmund on the analysis of the control structure of parallel programs with the help of Petri nets . His initially classic path as a scientist led him to software development and practice-oriented research at IBM in 1977 , where product development, software engineering, logic and linguistics in the LILOG project and knowledge-based systems were the main focuses of his work.
In 1993, Herzog was appointed to the professorship for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bremen , which he held until his retirement in 2009. There he and his colleagues founded the Technology Center for Computer Science at the University of Bremen in 1995 (speaker until 2009) and the Mobile Research Center in 2004 (speaker until 2010). From 2004 to 2007, Herzog was the first speaker of the Collaborative Research Center 637 “Self-regulation of logistic processes - a paradigm shift and its limits”. Since 1998 he has been an Affiliate Professor at the Machine Learning and Inference Laboratory of George Mason University in Fairfax, VA , which was originally founded by Richard Michalski and headed by Janusz Wojtusiak after his premature death. In 2010 he was appointed to the Wisdom Professorship “Visual Information Technologies” in the “School of Humanities and Social Sciences” at Jacobs University Bremen , which he held until 2019.
In 2015, Herzog was appointed to a Summit Professorship at Tongji University , Shanghai, PRC, where he worked on decision support systems with AI methods for urban planning at the interdisciplinary Institute for Urban Planning (CIUC - China Intelligent Urbanization Co-creation Center, Director: WU Zhiqiang) is working.
Since 2006 he has been an elected member of acatech - National German Academy of Science and Engineering . From 2008 to 2011 he was the spokesman for the ICT thematic network and from 2011 to 2013 he was a member of the acatech Presidium with responsibility for “International Relations”.
In 2008 he was elected a Fellow of the Society for Computer Science .
In 2019 he was selected by an independent jury as one of the "Ten Formative Minds" in German AI history.
Teaching
Herzog's preferred teaching includes student-led projects that make up a large part of the computer science studies at the University of Bremen. Examples are the completed projects SVP - Semantic video patterns and addict (automatic generation of movie trailers ) or in the winter semester started 2007 Project Mobile Semantic Desktop , which the disposition within a bicycle courier company was able to simplify.
