Ottmar Holdenrieder (born August 8, 1954 in Munich ) is a German forest scientist , mycologist and ecologist . He is a professor emeritus at the ETH Zurich . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Holdenr. ".

Live and act

Born in Munich, he studied horticultural science at the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan after graduating from high school and then did his doctorate with Peter Schütt at the forestry faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . His doctoral thesis investigations into the biological control of Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. (Fomes annosus P. Karst) on spruce (Picea abies H. Karst.) With antagonistic fungi was awarded the Thurn und Taxis Prize 1983. After completing his doctorate, Holdenrieder stayed as a research assistant at the chair for forest botany at the University of Munich and worked on various forest pathology research projects, for which he was also a visiting scientist at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala , the Agricultural Academy in Krakow and the Max Planck Institute worked for biochemistry in Munich- Martinsried .

In 1990, Holdenrieder became an associate professor at the ETH Zurich and on October 1, 1997, he became a full professor for forest protection and dendrology at the department for forest and wood research there. His main research areas, which had already become apparent during his time in Munich, were fungal diseases in forest trees - and especially the Hallimasch species - as well as the differential diagnosis of tree diseases and the biodiversity of woody plants . As a recognized specialist in the field of forest pathology , Holdenrieder was also the editor of the European Journal of Forest Pathology . When the forest science department of the ETH was closed and on January 1, 2004 it was merged with other departments into a new department for environmental sciences , Holdenrieder switched to the Institute for Integrative Biology .

He is a member of the following professional organizations: British Mycological Society (BMS), Swiss Forest Association (SFV), Swiss Dendrological Society, Society for Mycology and Lichenology / Mycology Section of the German Botanical Society (GML / SML), IUFRO Working Group Root & Butt Rot, International Bioherbicide Group (IBG), German Malacological Society (DMG) and the Friedrich Held Society (FHG).

Ottmar Holdenrieder lives in Zurich.
