Otto Fränzle

Otto Fränzle (born December 9, 1932 ; † August 20, 2009 in Preetz ) was a German geographer , geologist , ecologist , toxicologist , environmental chemist and geomorphologist .

Career

From 1953 to 1958 Fränzle attended the University of Bonn , where he studied geography , geology and soil science . Subsequently he became a Doctor of Science doctorate . The title of his dissertation was Glacial and Periglacial Formation in the Eastern Castilian Scheidegebirge (Central Spain) . In 1963 he completed his habilitation. The subject of his habilitation thesis was The Pleistocene Climate and Landscape Development of the Northern Po Plain in the Light of Soil Geographic Studies .

From 1964 onwards, Fränzle worked for UNESCO in Paris for two years . In 1967 he was appointed associate professor for physical geography and area studies at RWTH Aachen University. In 1968 he was one of the signatories of the “ Marburg Manifesto ”, along with many other professors from RWTH Aachen University , which formed an academic front against the emerging co-determination at universities. In 1970 he took over the chair for geography at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel .

In 1978 Fränzle published the so-called "three men paper" together with Paul Müller and Heinz Ellenberg . In this contribution to the then environmental research plan of the Federal Minister of the Interior, the three authors prepared the edition of a national program for ecosystem research.

From 1979 to 1983 Fränzle was President of the German Quaternary Association (German section of INQUA ). From 1988 to 1996 he was the spokesman for the interdisciplinary long-term ecosystem research project in the area of ​​the Bornhöve chain of lakes funded by the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology and the State of Schleswig-Holstein . From 1996 to 2002 Fränzle was spokesman for the DFG Graduate School Integrative Environmental Assessment at the Ecology Center of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.
