Otto Grau (born September 20, 1913 in Erlangen ; † November 4, 1981 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship at the age of 17, Otto Grau studied at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts from 1934 to 1939 . His artistic activity was interrupted for seven years by the Second World War. After returning from captivity in 1946, he first worked as a graphic artist in an art printing company and then in the building authority of the city of Erlangen. In order to create a livelihood as an art teacher, he studied art history, education and psychology at the University of Erlangen from 1956 to 1960 . He then taught at the Dürer Gymnasium in Nuremberg and was also creative. After he left school in 1969, he devoted himself to freelance work as an artist.

Otto Grau's works include watercolors of landscapes and cityscapes from Franconia as well as Western and Southern Europe and North Africa. He also created oil and acrylic paintings in abstract color compositions as well as large-format screen prints with often architectural-technical forms. He also created mosaics, glass windows, tapestries, posters and book illustrations as well as works of art in the context of the tenders for art in buildings . His works are shown in numerous art museums and public collections. There is a memorial plaque on the house where he was born in Erlanger Obere Karlstraße 22.

  • Honorary diploma from the Vallombreuse Gallery in Biarritz
  • Memorial exhibition of the Erlanger Kunstverein in the Städtische Galerie (1998)

Cultural Foundation and Prize

Graus Widow Hildegard († 1996) established the Otto and Hildegard Grau Cultural Foundation in 1993 , from the proceeds of which the Otto Grau Cultural Prize, endowed with 10,000 €, is awarded every two years to an outstanding Franconian artist. This happens in the fields of fine arts (graphics, sculpture, design, photography), literature, music and art history. According to the statutes, criteria for the award are a relationship between the award winner and Franconia through life or work or the close ties to Otto Grau's work.
