Otto Grotefend

Karl Otto Grotefend (born August 7, 1873 in Breslau , † December 21, 1945 in Hanover ) was a German archivist .

Professional career

During his studies, Grotefend became a member of the Old Breslau fraternity of the Raczeks in 1893 . After studying history in Breslau and Marburg , he joined the archive service in 1899. His first place of work was the Waldecker Archive belonging to the Prussian State Archives in Marburg . From there he moved to the Münster State Archives in 1901, the Danzig State Archives the following year and finally back to Marburg in 1903. In October 1908 he began working as an archive assistant (entry office for scientific archivists) at the State Archives in Szczecin . There he replaced Hermann Hoogeweg as director in 1923 . In 1930 Grotefend went to the State Archives in Hanover , where he worked until 1942, most recently as acting director.

Scientific activity

In 1901, Grotefend was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . Since the founding of the Historical Commission for Pomerania , he has played a key role in its first major project, the inventory of the non-state archives, for which he laid the foundation stone in 1910 with the tour and inventory of the Greifswald district . In addition, he also dealt with editing work, u. a. the regests of the Landgraves of Hesse and the document books of the families of the East and von Saldern . As director of the Szczecin Archives, he was also a board member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania.

family

Otto Grotefend is the son of the archivist and historian Hermann Grotefend . His son Ulrich Grotefend (* 1907, † 1945) studied history and German and also worked as an archivist.
