Otto Heinrich Treumann
Otto Heinrich Treumann (born October 30, 1919 in Fürth ; † June 6, 2001 in Weesp , Netherlands ) was an internationally renowned German-Dutch graphic artist . He was best known for his commercial graphics , his work for industry and his postage stamp designs and poster designs . Treumann is considered to be one of the most important graphic designers in the Netherlands and an influential reformer of the graphic arts in the Netherlands after the Second World War .
life and work
Otto H. Treumann grew up in a liberal Jewish family in Fürth. He emigrated with his family to Amsterdam before the persecution by the German National Socialists in 1935 .
Treumann studied 1935/1936 at the graphic school in Amsterdam and from 1936 to 1940 at the New Art School in Amsterdam ( Nieuwe Kunstschool by Paul Citroen (1896–1983), which based its teaching on the principles of the Bauhaus ) with Hajo Rose (1910– 1989). During the Second World War, Treumann worked underground and designed material for the Dutch resistance movement. After 1945 he worked as a freelance graphic artist. Treumann's works are considered functional graphics, their design was always subordinate to their message.
After 1947 Treumann worked for the in-house magazine of the Kunstzijde Knie , the Rayon Revue . He has received many awards for this work.
One of his best-known works is the logo of the Israeli airline El Al , designed in 1963 , but also the logos of the Kröller-Müller Museum , and for the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects are well-known works by Treumann. From 1962 to 1990 he designed eleven postage stamps for the Dutch Post. His numerous poster designs have received numerous international awards.
Otto Treumann was a board member of the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

- 1957 the Duwaer Prize of the city of Amsterdam

- 1949 with five prizes at a poster exhibition in Vienna
- 1952 to 1958 with numerous Dutch and international poster awards
- 1960 with the DA Thieme Prize
- 1970 with the David Röell Prize

For his services to the resistance against the German occupation Treumann was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
