Otto Heller (literary scholar)

Otto Heller (* 1863 in Saxony ; † July 29, 1941 ) was an American literary scholar .

Life

Otto Heller first tried his hand at acting and then attended Charles University in Prague and the universities in Munich , Vienna and Berlin . In 1883 he emigrated to the United States , where he became a tutor and, in 1887, an instructor in Greek at LaSalle College in Philadelphia . In 1890 he received his doctorate from the University of Chicago . Haller was briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before he was appointed professor of German language and literature at Washington University in St. Louis in 1892 .

This was financed for him by Adolphus Busch for over 10 years and founded the German department of the university. In 1914 Heller received another professorship in modern European literature. In 1923 he became the first dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences , which he remained until his retirement in 1937.

Heller was married to Jean S. Blair Heller. During his time he was known as a writer and literary critic.
